Bachelor of Mass Communication

In response to market needs, the Department of Mass Communication at ANU prepares students for careers in electronic and print journalism, public relations/corporate communication, book publishing and advertising.  The department offers hands on experience to our students in our electronic studio and print laboratory. 

Students have several avenues through which to express their spiritual, academic, social, and cultural growth, from in-house publications Naz-Buzz and Checkmate, the journalism club and the PR Choir, to various sports and clubs.    

The uniqueness of Mass Communications training at ANU is the value added to courses through integrating Christian faith with education.  Our education is guided by the Wesleyan Holiness tradition, which insists on academic excellence and transformation of individual character to develop integrity. In appreciation of the quality of our students, more and more individuals are choosing to study at ANU.

Admission Standards

Applicants for the Bachelor of Mass Communication program must meet all of Africa Nazarene University entrance requirements as specified in the University Academic Handbook. In addition a minimum of B- in English and a C in Mathematics in KCSE or equivalent is required, Typing proficiency (Keyboard). A pass in any foreign language will be an added advantage

Course Goals

  1. To give the student knowledge and understanding of the theoretical issues and practice of Mass Communication.
  2. To develop within students an understanding of the societal role of communication through the media.
  3. To enable students to apply and interrelate the theoretical and the operational aspects of mass media communication.
  4. To prepare the student to recognize and apply the principles and concepts of effective communication in various settings (church, corporate, community), and to address unique problems at the individual, communal, institutional and organizational levels.
  5. To develop an understanding of the complex issues of mass media communication ethics.
  6. To understand the full scope of mass media communication - newspapers, magazines, radio, television, computers, film, books, direct mail, electronic mail; and to understand their relationship to one another and the society.
  7. To develop basic skills in news writing, reporting, editing, graphics, and consumerism in print, and/or electronic media.
  8. To prepare the student for further study in communication.
  9. To prepare students for leadership and managerial skills in communication/media industries.

Concentrations

Print Media
This set of courses consist of theory and practical courses that focus on the production, management and publishing of print content. It is designed to meet the needs of one seeking to start or develop a career in the the publishing industry.
Electronic Media
This is set of theory and practical courses which acquaint students to the fundamentals of video and audio production. It is designed to meet the needs of those interested in starting or developing a career the broadcast industry.
