Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)
The Bachelor of Commerce program seeks to prepare men and women for effective participation in the business world. The course of study includes liberal arts for a broad base of intellectual and social skills. Units in Bible, Christian beliefs and ethics reflect the desire of the university to train Christian leadership. Professional competence in business practices is complemented by the opportunity to specialize in the third and fourth years.
The curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad-based perspective of Management and the opportunity to specialise in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Entrepreneurship, Management and Marketing. All Bachelor of Commerce students must take all units identified as "BCM." These are foundational to the program, whichever of the concentrations students take in their third and fourth years. There are 22 of these units required of all students in the Bachelor of Commerce Program.
Admission Standards
Applicants for the Bachelor of Commerce program must meet all of Africa Nazarene University entrance requirements as specified in the University Academic Handbook. In addition a pass (grade C) in mathematics and English are required. Preference is given to applicants who have passed the KCSE with a minimum of grade B- in at least two of the following subjects:
- Accounting
- Commerce
- Economics
- Mathematics
Course Objectives
A student who graduates from Africa Nazarene University with a Bachelors' degree in Commerce should:
- Be able to integrate sound Christian ethics into business and economic activities;
- Have developed and be able to apply problem solving and analytical skills;
- Be able to think creatively and innovatively and translate such thought to worthwhile business contributions;
- Be prepared for graduate study in business;
- Have grown and continue to grow in personal character, a thirst for knowledge and involvement in community affairs and church activities.
The Bachelor of Commerce program offers opportunity to specialize in the third and fourth years in order to enhance professional competency. By the middle of the second year, students must therefore choose an area of specialization. There are five possibilities:
- Accounting - ACC Labels those courses in the Accounting concentration
- Management - MGT Labels those courses in the Management concentration
- Marketing - MKT Labels those courses in the Marketing concentration
- Banking and Finance - FIN Labels those courses in the Banking and Finance concentration
- Entrepreneurship - ENT Labels those courses in the Entrepreneurship Concentration
Availability of concentration units is dependent upon sufficient student populations.
The number of units required for graduation:
- BCM Units (Units common to all Bachelor of Commerce Students) - 22
- Concentration Units (Units in a particular area of specialization) - 9
- Electives (three from concentrations and one from any area in the Bachelor’s program) - 4
- UCC Units (University Common Courses) - 17
- Total number of units required to graduate - 52
